Red Telephone Presents - Stuck In The Past Part Three / Selector's Cut

Vancouver has an awesome skateboard community that often feels like a big extended family, and the locals have always welcomed newcomers with open arms (and beers). The 90's saw some of the earliest waves of skate-migration to the "California of Canada" as skaters from all over the country sought out milder winters and spots they had seen in magazines and videos, many of them transplanted from the east coast.

Part three of Stuck In The Past is a special Selector's Cut montage featuring clips of some of my favorite Vancouver natives ripping alongside a solid grip of Maritime marauders, capped off with a collection of my own footage filmed between 1997 - 1998 (99' claimed an ankle). A huge thanks goes out to all those who returned the favor and took on camera duties for my benefit - it's not easy staying behind the lens when your friends are getting you hyped to skate.

Enjoy the flashback, and stay tuned for part 4 coming late November !     - Adam Cassidy

Red Telephone Presents - Stuck In The Past Part Two / Shane O & Gerry

Part 2 of Stuck In The Past shines a spotlight on two Downtown Vancouver OG's (both via Kamloops BC) who were undeterred by the massive skate-proofing wave of the mid-to-late 1990's and instead chose to "keep it real" by practically living at the Eatons Plaza, while simultaneously scouring every last inch of the city for new spots. Shane O'Flynn and Gerry Loughran bringin' the nitty gritty in this one... Tribe Vibes and INC on the mix. Check it.

Red Telephone is proud to present part one of Stuck In The Past, "You Pipe ?", a dedication to the "U"s we love to use. A collection of Hi8 footage filmed between 1997 - 1999 at various indoor halfpipes around BC (plus a quick clip of Jesse Watson skating one of the earlier incarnations of the Homegrown Skateboards ramp in Lahave, Nova Scotia), featuring Jeff Logan, Alex Chalmers, Barry Walsh, Dave Priest and many more transitional astronauts of the nineties.

STUCK IN THE PAST TEASER

In the early 90's my friend Amos randomly got his hands on the rental video camera from his stepfather's shop, a risky loan considering it would be used by teenagers to film their unpolished skateboard skills. I don't actually recall anything in particular that we captured on tape during those rare occasions there was a camera present, but Amos seems sure those tapes have long since bitten the dust... maybe for the better since it was the massive purple jeans era.

It wasn't until the winter of 96'/97' that I finally got a video camera of my own, a Hi8 Canon (model?), and started bringing it along on the majority of skate sessions. Although I regret it looking back, I wasn't much of an incidental footage filmer - I was too busy skating to stop and get behind a camera for anything other than helping a friend get a clip. Nevertheless, over time I seemed to become known as a filmer, like it or not. It ended up providing me with countless opportunities, and a few shoeboxes full of golden memories.

STUCK IN THE PAST is a new micro-series that takes a heavily vignetted look back at the late 90's skateboard scene in Vancouver, as seen through the lens of that Canon Hi8. Classic clips, underground OG's, Slam City Jam, and a few surprises.... it was the whateverest of times.

G9 FILES: LAST DAY IN TOWN

Matt Day / Switch Nosegrind / Oceanside / 2015 / [o] AcPhoto

Over the next bit I'll be posting a few personal favorite photos taken during the haphazard and unknowing creation of the modern day disasterpiece, G9 Summit. Might even bop out some crusty G-sides clips in the near future, so if you didn't make it in the full video... well, you're probably not gonna be in this extra junk either, but there will be slightly worse clips of some of the other dudes in it whom you may or may not know. How's that for a teaser ? G9 keeps it real. G9 is your friend.

Red Telephone presents G9 SUMMIT Full Video

In this age of instagram clips and the 15 second attention span, a camera that can be pulled from your pocket and recording at a moment's notice reigns supreme. Iphones upload a memory as it happens, and then that memory fades once the next ultra-slow-mo'd NBD magically appears, forever buried in a seemingly endless haystack of digital confusion. Anticipation has become unfashionable.

Enter the G9 SUMMIT. Filmed entirely on a Canon G9 Powershot between 2009-2015, The G9 SUMMIT follows Red-Tel mastermind DTZ through almost 6 years worth of traveling and good times with friends. Fun is the focus..... Hammers ? Hardly.

So grab a big bag and kick back, cause' she's 25 minutes long....  this one's for the homies !
